California Prop 65 Warning

At US Fireplace Depot, we are committed to providing our customers with high-quality products that are safe and reliable. As part of this commitment, we want to inform you about California's Proposition 65, also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.

WARNING

What is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 mandates that businesses provide clear warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. These chemicals may be present in products purchased by Californians, in their homes or workplaces, or may be released into the environment. This warning empowers Californians to make informed decisions about their exposure to these substances.

Additionally, Proposition 65 prohibits businesses in California from knowingly discharging significant levels of these listed chemicals into sources of drinking water.

Proposition 65 was enacted into law in November 1986 after being approved by California voters. The official title of this legislation is the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.

Why Do We Provide a Warning?

Some of the products sold on our website may contain chemicals that are included on California’s Proposition 65 list. This does not necessarily mean that the product is unsafe, but we are required by law to provide a clear and reasonable warning if there is a possibility that exposure to a Proposition 65-listed chemical could exceed the levels determined by the state as posing no significant risk.

What Types of Chemicals Are on the Proposition 65 List?

The list includes a broad array of naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals that can be found in pesticides, common household products, food, drugs, dyes, and solvents. These chemicals may also be used in manufacturing and construction or be byproducts of chemical processes, such as motor vehicle exhaust.

Since its initial publication in 1987, the list has grown to include approximately 900 chemicals and continues to expand each year.

How Can I Protect Myself?

The positive impact of Proposition 65 is that many manufacturers have altered their production processes to make products safer for consumers. However, there are still many everyday items that contain listed chemicals that cannot be modified. As a result, it’s important for consumers to be aware of potential risks and take precautions to reduce or eliminate exposure. Your protective measures will depend on the specific product and the chemical you are trying to avoid.
